Default First one into hibernation

Beatrice has taken herself off to the hibernation chamber indoors and yesterday burrowed herself down. This is in spite of warm temperatures this week. I have never known her go down so early.

Bertie has slowed down but not ready yet. We have had torrential rain today so he has not moved, so will be interesting to see if he comes out tomorrow, when we are predicted to have a nice day.

I think I am right Alan in that yours are already hibernating up in Scotland?

Anyone else?

Not quite yet Jan but my Horsfields will be going down in the next week as haven't eaten for ages. Maybe a week earlier than usual but not a lot.

Mine didn’t move much yesterday Jan, but expect they will today as there is sunshine today. They are gradually slowing down, and almost stopped eating, I think I will withdraw food this week, and start soaking them almost daily. They will come out less and less , until they stop, probably by the last week of October, then by the first week of November I will pack them away. And that’s how it goes.

Oh no mine ate lots on Friday in the heat - shorts and tshirts here. Friday.
Real pain as yesterday was horrid and no one appeared , today back to warmth and running round.
I don't think the cloches help as I open them up and they are like hair dryer air wafting out CB

Well my tortoises have been gradually slowing down since August, they had been coming out to graze but only for short times.
I checked on them today (extra heat on for half a day still) and they have hardly moved. One has already gone down (her own choice) and the others are very slow, even though its really warm today.

you don't mind them grazing sandy? Some of mine need to have weeds handed to them but don't eat but the grazes are still grazing a little not so much today. my Horsfields have all but buried away permanently til next spring now ... CB

Mine went out today once the sun came round onto the garden, one or two nibbled some grass, not much, I gave them all a bath, they went back in the cold frame and that was it. It’s 3.15 and I’ve brought them in and they gone to bed.

Mine normally graze well, but as they have slowed down its only on sunny days. They dont eat much so dont worry about anything left in their stomachs. I have now blocked off the entrance as one female will bury down outside, and its the only reason she wants out now:0)

Yes they are and it makes no difference what the temperatures are, they go when they want to go. I have found when I check them during the winter they are often not in the same place they went down so they do move about a fair bit
