Default Basking bulb

Hi,

This is on a thermostate, but at night all the lights are turned off,

The temp does drop over night,

My question is, should I be leaving the basking bulb on all night ?

If not what heating should I be getting

Thanks again x

No, the bulb shouldn't be on overnight.

I use a ceramic heat emitter. It's a bulb that gets hot but no light is emitted. x

Thanks Hun,

Ok so better get to the pet shop first thing, do I position this along side the basking bulb, and switch it on when I switch that off,

I don't think I've got one thing right yet

You will probably find it cheaper to buy on line, a lot of people are buying from swell reptiles, they seem to be good prices.
Tortoises respond to light as well as heat, so they need it dark at night and light in the day, so as has been said at night if the temps are dropping below 18c you need a ceramic heat emitter bulb and fitting. I haven't used one , but I would think , position it near where the tort usually sleeps.

I bought mine from amazon, that was cheaper than a pet shop, I haven't looked on swell reptiles though, so compare the prices. I've found since getting the CHE that Darwin is a lot more alert in the mornings. You won't need it in the summer, at least I didn't find that I did x

We all have to learn and start somewhere!! You have got 1 thing right at least, you ask what you don't know!! That's better than making it up as you go along, at least you know your tort is getting the best you can give

Depending on what the temp is like at night in your house you might not need anything. For Mediterranean species a temperature like 15C at night is normally fine.

I think it can depend on the individual animal , how they respond to night time temps, if your tortoise isn't very active during the day, with night time temps as low as 15c, then you will need to keep the night time temps a bit higher.

Darwin was quite sluggish without the CHE. He was eating a bit but not much and sleeping most of the time. I find him much better now x
