I would maybe take her to the vets for a full MOT. Could be something thats been ongoing for quite some time but has only recently manifested itself into symptoms.

Thanks everyone. The patient is now in an underbed box with a halogen lamp and a ceramic heater. To confuse matters the tortoise seems a bit better today, certainly not worse and at times the eyes have been completely open and looked alright. I don't think this is at root an eye or light problem and this tortoise has been under the same lamps before with no problem. On bathing this evening the tortoise was active and liking the water, not trying to escape. This feels like the wrong stage to rush to the vet. I will keep under observation and maintain the warmth. It's scrabbling about in the bed box right now despite the dark. Although I can get to a good vet it is 50 miles away and the journey would be a stress.

I've made an appointment with a vet because there is clearly something wrong even if its not getting worse. The eyes are properly open but they are very dull. They should be like wee black marbles.
I'll keep you posted and thanks for your support / suggestions.

Update - patient is stable. Will eat a little of favourite foods but still lethargic and very dull about the eyes.
Has peed in bath several times but no urates - bit of a worry. Top quality vet on Monday morning.

Good luck Jonathan. Are you seeing Kevin Eatwell? I spoke to him for a while last week at the hibernation / fluids talk at the Dick Vet school. He's a great guy! Your tort will be in good hands. Keep us posted.

Hi Corra, we are booked into his clinic but I'm not certain it will be him personally. Hope so.
