I read it earlier, certainly gets you thinking...
My tortoise is only 5 months old and pyramiding is something I want to try to avoid. |

children's bones are also soft that is why they often survive a fall from a great height

I think it's humidity. Tamba has pyramidding and she has had quite a good diet, although I didn't know you had to monitor humidity. She always had baths, calcium and nutrobol.

I thought that it was interesting, and something I'd never thought about that the wearing down of the keratin layer was a good thing, when a tort digs into a sandy soily substrate, and walks through coarse undergrowth, that sort of thing.
I have a tort that was (I think) kept in a viv, no soil as substrate and grown on too quick.. From reading that article I'd say she'd had little if any humidity in her husbandry, she is pretty dark and lumpy and it looks like there is..I don't know to to word it, but too many layers of keratin on her carapace |

Ed gets a mention at the bottom I see... however, in my opinion the answers to pyramiding lies with the ancient Egyptians

I guess I need to know ALL about keratin - what it is, what part it plays and what it does...and also why too much of it creates problems. I will read the article...but maybe Ed or yourself can help me understand the part it plays. xx Sorry for all the questions. It might help people who are new too, to understand this. xx |
