Are you unable to travel out to a better vet? Someone might know of someone more suitable in your area that you can get to. Otherwise its going to be very hard for you to get ontop of this if your vet is as useless as she sounds.

Its about 2 hours away but we are pretty desperate so i'll check if mum is up to it (she is disabled so sometimes finds it hard). We love our pets though so we will give them a call. Thanks Helen! Any more, let me know! xxxx

How old are these tortoises, I would consider nebulisation in f10 and topical application of either F10 or a drug like ibaflin gel. You will need supportive care also ie bathing and assist feeding if necessary. If the tortoises are looking sick you will also need injected antibiotics. A husbandry review is in order too (temps, uv etc). All in all I would think these guys require hospitalisation, as well as herpes and mycoplasma testing. You have lots to do to help these guys

Spoke to mum lastnight about the vet in Newquay, it rang bells with mum - there used to be a vet there called Mr King but he moved away years ago to Scotland. Mum has called this morning and some fatastic news is that there is a vet there who has been trained by Mr King! Trying to get torts there ASAP today! Just praying we aren't too late.
That other vet is fine for cats and dogs etc, but I was mad that she didn't jump at the chance to check what I had cleared from the mouth. I'd have thought as someone who didn't specialise, she would have looked if only to learn something new for her own benefit! Will update you on what the vet in Newquay says! Any other info in the meantime is always gratefully received. We are going to go through the set-up later too. Currently we have the repti-glo UV lighting in vivarium and other enclosure, plus a heatlamp in both. Both also have somewere for the torts to retreat if they want to go to bed or get out of the heat. Generally the vivariums are only used for new hatchlings and up to the age of about 2 / 3. After that they start to go out in the daytime in summer into an enclosure to start to harden off to outdoor conditions. We have also used the greenhouse in the past as its generally lovely and warm in there for them. Any suggestions on temps? The vivarium has a thermostat up to 30 degrees (overall temp - not neccessarily the temp direct under the lamp) for when we need to maintain a steady temp. We also provide a source of humidity with a high dish of water with sponge or kitchen paper inside. In the past its done the job fine, but maybe now there are better ways etc. Difficulty, i'm ashamed to admit, is cost. We can do so much, but times are hard at home and we only recently had to pay out almost £300 for one of our cats. Vet thinks it was trauma - ended up on a drip for 2 days in the vets, stayed in for 3 in total. Costly.... :S |

Torts staying in with vet over the weekend, he is going to nebulise both of them and try to hydrate Rollie. He thinks Rollie is very ill but he isn't quite as bad as he thought previously. This one is the baby that had a bad leg - what we thought was gout, the specialist vet agreed and was surprised that the vet said there was nothing wrong with it! (different vet though)
The vet dealing with them up to today has overstepped the mark though. We hadn't told her we were going to the specialist earlier in the day as we wanted to spare her feeling that we didn't think she was good enough, so, without listening to any explanation, she made the rude accusation in an awful tone "so you are just letting him die slowly". What an awful thing to say! She didn't even apologise when I called to fill her in on the situation, just accused and was really arrogant, claiming we should have told her. We would have, only at THAT time mum had only just got home and was waiting for a call-back from the specialist vet! So angry over it all. What an awful end to an awful week On the bright side, they are in good hands now and we are buying some kit in to continue treatment here. |

How truly insensitive of that vet to say that to you. I am so sorry to read that...But know this, YOU are doing the best you can. Keep positive and well done for being such a caring loving owner. Try to be calm. Take things in your stride and just wait and see how things go. My thoughts are with you and I wish you and your torts all the best. Stay Strong. xx

Does the vet actually just work for the practice or is she a partner? If she just works there I think it would be worth complaining about her. She was clearly out of her depth dealing with your tortoises and obviously failed to even consult a more experienced vet about treatment. Plus she was incredibly rude to suggest that.
You should have just told her that she's out of her depth and you wanted a specialist who knew what they were doing. If the vet is a partner I would be tempted to register my pets elsewhere. Don't feel bad about what was said. Your doing the best you can for your tortoises, no doubt if your previous vet had continued 'treating' them they probably would have died. Hopefully now your tortoises will have a nice speedy recovery. Helen xx |
