When I was a child it was a typical practice to drill a hole in the rear marginal scutes of a tortoise to teather it, I remember seeing many a tortoise tied up in the back garden of many people.

I have a few tortoises here that still have the hole that once teathered them.

I have never though seen in the UK a teathered leopard, burmese or sulcata.

I have a tortoise Abby that was bought for me for 50 pence from are local pet shop 35 years ago she is the mother to most of my breeding females and also a grandmother possible a great grandmother next season

What if we put a leaflet together that edugates people on how wrong it is to drill hole in torts shell and how harmful it is, i'm more than willing to put this i all my local vets and reptile suppliers, if we just reach just a few is something!!!
If we write it in a way it does not sound like preaching maybe it will go in!!
Maybe tort forums like this one who has newsletters could do an article on it!!

it's a old pratice that is not really doen any more so ther eis not really a need to raise the wareness of stopping it now.

Fraid not. Did have a friend who had one with Flash painted on it though.

Well I am old enough to remember the tortoise with Fred painted on its shell, I think it died did'nt it, poor wee thing
