Default A10's

I have recently got two new tortoises,

Med spur thigh - 40/50 yrs old
Hermann - 10 yrs old

the problem is neither have certificates,

from my understanding you dont need a certificate if they are given to you?
and you dont need one if you dont intend to resale or breed from them,

am i right in thinking this?

Yes that's right. I don't know what happens if you do breed from them though, if for example you had more torts which escaped into each other's enclosures

you could but what if I like me you had 17 hatchlings, it wouldn't be fair as at some point you'd need to rehome some and anyone in the future wouldn't be able to breed or sell either and they would come chasing back to the orriginal owner. If you rehome an adult without papers and don't want to or can't get papers then don't breed from it or else face the prospect of having to throw away eggs. Plus by the time you've paid for an incubater to hatch one egg for yourself you might just as well by a hatchling with papers. Its always worth trying to get a cert for a rehomed adult you never know and Defra might well issue one just for breeding.
