A little help please?
Hello Guys!
Right, i am collecting a pair of 15yr old redfoots on saturday. They are 1.5 hours away, so what would be the best way to transport them? In a box with lots of shredded paper? In a box with towels? Seperate boxes? Or together? Cool the car or heat it for them? Any other tips for transporting? Thanks, Tom. |

Definately keep the car warm. Seperate boxes would probably be best and any absorbant substrate in the box is fine.

I put a hot water bottle in the foot well next to my tort who was in a polystyrene box the other day when we went to the vets, the water in the bottle wasn't boiling hot though!

Hi there Tom,
Your best bet is to obtain a polystyrene fish transport box from your local aquatics retailer, who are usually happy to let you have them free of charge. You will need two for redfoots of this size. Cut out some airholes around the top and give the boxes a good rinse through. A good layer of the substrate (about 6 inches) you are going to be using in their enclosure will be beneficial as the torts can dig down into it which will stop them sliding around and make them feel more secure (also the damness will keep the boxes quite humid). Keep the car at a comfortably warm temperature no less than 21C (Although slightly higher would be better). |

My local rep shop (Only 5 min walk) stocks huge poly boxes that both could fit in. Would that be better?

When i transport mine i make sure the car is warm but not too warm.
If they are too warm they get very active and start getting stressed wanting to get out. For adult reds i use huge plastic boxes or large cardboard boxes with newspaper and towels
