Default New guy from Arizona, USA

I'm from the sunny desert area of Southern Arizona, USA. Yes, it gets really hot here.

I have been keeping Greeks and Russians for several years.
I have 6 eggs (Ibera) in the incubator, although I don't think they are fertile.

Also, just took in a baby sulcata last week to foster for a while until I can find it a proper home.

I've been checking out the site for a few weeks and really like it, very informative.

Thanks,

Keith

Hi Keith, welcome to Shelled Warriors
I've got a question that might sound a bit odd: does it ever get too hot for your tortoises? no chance of this here in the UK of course, but in arizona it must be a problem...do they burrow?

Thank you all for the welcome.

Ted, the heat can be a problem if special care is not taken. I would not try to keep most other species in this area.

To provide for a cooler area I have very well shaded hide areas for them as well as making sure that the ground is a little damp and that the area is well ventilated so that there is plenty of air movement, this creates the effect that an evaporative cooler would have in dry conditions. Outside temps could be 110 to 115 degrees F (or 43 to 46 degrees C), but the damp hide area could be as cool as 85 degrees F (or 29 degrees C). They will dig a little bit or just lay on a cool spot.

Although we usually only have temps that high for about 6 weeks, usually during July and August. Of course that is also when we get our Summer rain storms (monsoons) so the rain drops the temps down quite a bit when that happens.
