Ed ive use combined bulbs for baby reds and it damaged their eyes. They would bang into things and when they ate they couldnt get the food, it was like they were biting the air. I dont use UVB for baby reds. When they are a year old i use 5.0 tubes

You're experience is different from mine. I've used Mercury vapor lamps at 12 inches from the subsrtate... no problems. I used them for about 7 years. I don't use then amymore only because it is too expensive and difficult in terms of power.

Yeah they are expensive
Ive had no problems raising my reds with no UVB for the first year as have others.
Im glad you have raised yours ok with UVB i know others that have used UVB with no problems, but they make sure they have plently of shade.
