I have a feeling the heat in france and spain will envelope southern England gradually and raise by a degree or two, but Scotland will be colder towards Norway weather. (sorry Scotland). Swallows and Amazon summers Emma , its coming I can feel it in the air! CB

I do love your optimism, I would a swallows and Amazons summer, one of my favourite books. But I do predict a blinder of a summer this year! Starting in March with unusually warm weather, and we will all be getting our torts outside ( in the south that is, sorry Scotland )

He did lose more than I'd expected on wind down so I've been keeping a close eye on him.
We even had a power cut on week 3. Fortunately, it didn't last long.
He's had a couple of baths and scoffed some plantain and is currently stomping around his new bigger table.
Glad I made the decision to hibernate him. Looking forward to getting him back outside now...Come on spring!
Which method did you use for hibernation if you dont mind me asking

Keith this is really useful.
I haven't used the fridge method, but thinking about this for next year - or should I say later this year!

I spent so much time checking temperatures at all hours this season.

Is the egg cup significant?

The egg cup has water in it. I put this in for a bit more humidity. The soil/sand I used was very slightly damp when I put Jerry in so whether I needed to put egg cup in as well, I really don't know!..The humidity did stay quite stable though at about 55%.
Ironically, I removed Jerry a few days early because he started to look quite dehydrated in week 7. I think this is because he didn't dig down into the soil/sand substrate and stayed as you see in the photo the whole time, but perhaps this is normal and with it being my first hibernation I erred on the side of caution.
You can see I added lots of water bottles and this did keep the temps stable between 4.5 and 5.5 degrees throughout the hibernation, except for when I opened the door (it went up to about 5.8 then).

Though it is quite daunting Jan, (it just seems wrong to put your animal in the fridge), I did feel that I had an element of control over the situation, which of course we don't with the good old British weather. I did miss the fella' though.

Thanks Keith. I will start thinking about hibernation over the summer so that I am well prepared. I think you detected my inner feelings about putting my torts in the fridge!

He has three padlocks on his outdoor run. Maybe I'll train him up!
