Tortoise Log Book

I mentioned on my intro that I have been working on a kinda Tortoise Log Book. The idea is that it will assist in monitoring the growth and health of my tortoise and also record key data which will assist in any medical circumstances or for identification in case I lose him. It currently includes -

- Records of weight and length
- Calculations for Jacksons Ratio
- Key data including import and identification data/pictures.
- UV lamp change reminders.
- Other details, record of medical history for example.

I have posted screenshots for you guys to have a look at and would welcome any comments in case I have missed something etc. The graph backgrounds and a better front end with easy use buttons will be generated once completed (and once I've learned how to do it).

The data shown is fictitious and was used only for the screenshots.

If anybody wants a copy or to help in developing the front end then please PM me and I will send it on to you. When its finished, if people want it and the Admins allow it maybe it can be published on here. Obviously it is with the usual caveats of just being a guide.

I know it's just a mock up, but on the length and weight page not sure you want to do a daily weight and length. Every 2 weeks to a month would be much better. Never really liked the Jackson Ratio for checking a tortoises weight (it's to low and wasn't based on animals in the wild). A better weight check is the Hailey Calculator http://www.ahailey.f9.co.uk/cond.htm

Isn't the Hailey Calculator based on captive tortoises?

No, it's based on wild ones.

I misread the post I stand corrected.

Regardless... such a ratio should be compiled from healthy captive tortoises. Tortoise in the wild are actually subjected to suboptimal conditions based on time of the year and annual variation in climatic conditions.

I didn't read through the paper but if the samples were taken in the spring... no. If the samples were taken at the end of the year just before the cool season... yes. If the samples were taken in a drought year... yes. If the samples were taken in a wet year... no. See my point.

If the ratio is based on captive well cared for tortoises you are going to get a more valid assessement for captive tortoises.

I do see what you mean Ed. What concerns me is my young female is under weight by that scale and if she is slightly underweight by that then she is even moreso than she should be in captivity.
