I can't remember where I got this link - it might have even been on this forum - but it provides hours of fun with names (look under the category of Names from the Former Soviet Union, and then under Russian names and there are huge lists of names with their meanings):

You can get lost for hours in the different categories of names.
But also don't forget that the best name for a Russian tortoise is probably Stan (because they don't actually come from Russia but from all the 'stans' (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kyrghestan, Kazakhstan, etc.).
