eating top soil during wind down
Hi again, Pickles is on day 3 of wind down and Is apparently hungry enough to try eating soil. Or he might have been foraging for tiny bits of dried weeds which have been trampled into the soil on his daily stomps but its a no no either way.
I think I read about putting him on a towel? Is that ok? Or would newspaper or something be better? Thanks

A towel is probably best as eventually he will get hungry enough to try eating the newspaper.

Yes they will eat paper as Dan has said. One of my females was a devil for doing so.

Oh my, just read this and realised why the poop if rom my two looked a bit strange. I thought t might be the wormer but They have been nibbling on the newspaper too. I thought I was doing so well at the end of week three of wind down. I have removed all the newspaper but now I am concerned how much is still in their tummies. Only a week to go, any idea what I should do?

Oh not sure sorry :/ Hopefully someone else will have some advice. Maybe extend wind down just to make sure they're empty?
I've moved Pickles into the small table on a towel with just a couple of hides and a water bowl. He had a bit of a stomp to see what on earth I'd done to his home but went straight back to bed. Poor hungry dude

Think you might be right, lots of baths and a couple of extra days of light to aid digestion. Looking at the poops today there can't be much left! Lesson learnt for me ☺

There is lots of learning to do I wouldn't have thought about them eating paper either! Or the soil for that matter.

I agree, one year my Lilly pooped polystyrene balls during windown, there were a few in amongst the soil, so now I change to newspaper and shredded paper, the adults don't eat it, but I guess the little ones would, it's very tough when they are looking at you for food, I feel quite cruel, no matter what anyone says it us humans that force them into hibernation x
