Default Snow

First time this morning I have had to dig out my tortoises to feed them, there was about 5 inches of snow on top of their house. They were still pacing around waiting as usual.
They are normally asleep now but one of the females was gravid at the end of November,so I kept the temps up and the ones that were asleep have woke up one by one, only one still asleep.
Feeding 6 tortoises at this time of the year(they are eating me out of house and home)is costing me a fortune never mind the electric bill.
The perils of keeping them I suppose.

Hence we now have solar power to help keep our energy costs in the realms of decency!

The solar panels on your roof, will need to be cleared of snow as a priority!

The set up is best described as a large garden cloche, measuring 7x6 feet with half felt roof and half sloping triple wall Perspex removable panels. It has a 8x4 outdoor garden with access in warmer weather. It is divided in two separate parts so they can wander and get away from one another if they want, there is several hides for them to bury in.
It is heated by two 4 foot tubular heats each having it's own digital programmable thermostat with an additional heater wired to a frost stat in case the other two fail.
There are 3 basking areas and full spectrum lighting on timers as well.
It is also double skinned and fully insulated including the floor and I cover the Perspex up with 50 mm celotex at night and on cold days.
The coldest temperature recorded in there is 13.5c this winter, because of the insulation the bills aren't to bad.
