prolaps
i brought a hermans tortoise 3 years ago as i felt sorry for her from a pet shop as she had such a lumpy shell were she had been fed so wrongly, and had no tail, she has been a happy tortoise in the garden all summer with my other 4, i have from 65 years down to 2 years old, well a few weeks ago she had a prolaps i had her to the vet were she had it put back in and had a stitch to hold it in, she had been good for a week eating well, and loving the weather, then she strained to have a poo and it keeps trying to come out again, i have been putting liquid parafin up she to help her go to toilet but today it looks like it will be back to the vet again, in the morning, the vet said he thinks she should be put down, she seems so happy has any one had this problem

Denise that seems so sad. Dont know where your based but is it a specialist reptile vet your taking her to?
My only similar experience is with a very young hatchling 6 months who was prolapsing his penis, boy did I panic the first time it happened! My vet Hannah Bould reassured me it was fine as long as the tissue went back in, which it always has - but not always straight away. I persavered with the baby oil enema's which I think helped, she also said I could gently ease it back in with an oil soaked cotton bud. It always seems to occur during the bath, when he's going to the loo. Mine has been xrayed to confirm no stones. So dont know why it keep happening. Just hoping it doesnt come out & stay out when vets on holiday or similar. Dont know what to suggest but it seems awful to have her put to sleep if she's otherwise happy & active. If it definately a girl? Im sure I have read on here that if its a boy they can have penis removed & still be fine, that may be a better option than putting to sleep. Good luck & do let us know how you get on. |

Have an x-ray taken. This will tell you if she is trying to pass a stone or is just blocked up.
