For example when we had our bitch spayed who was a small jack russell I was quoted from £30 up to £150 for the same procedure, we went with the lowest who incidently also happened to be the most popular, probably because they charged the least but also gave just as good a service as the £150 the only difference was that the cheaper one always had so many patients seats were often put outside where as the most exspensive had plenty inside. The cheapest worked from part of their house and didn't have the big posh surgery of the costliest. A newmarket horse vet will charge several times as much as a local simply because they come from newmarket, there should be a max and min amount chargeable and certainly not the vast differences between a standard spaying which should be the same where ever you go. Microchipping is another example that can vary from £10 up to £50 for the same animal and same procedure, there was also a thing on the tv and in the papers about unnessecary prodecures and prescriptions being made and the only explaination for that would be greediness on the surgery's part.

I think you answer many of your own questions here
You are not only paying for the vets and the nurses salaries. You are also paying for the overheads on the buildings and on equipment. Xray machine, ultrasound scanner, anaesthetic equipment, computers for the records, telephone systems etc (and receptionists, cleaners and other support staff). An xray maschine costs £ 25.000+
Neutering is one of the 'lost leaders' I tried to explain about in my earlier post, being offered at considerably under cost price, and probably financed by the mark up charged on some drugs. There is no way a bitch spay can be done for £30, even the £150 is probably cost price at the best.

We once got charged just under £40 to get a very ill Rat PTS

£30 for the vet to see her & £8.90 for the injection.

When we first got our Leopard, we would take her to the vets every week for a checkup as she constantly had a snotty nose.we would often get charged £40 for the vet to see us and about £11 for the A/B

Awful! When I am a vet, prices will be low, and for injections, getting put to sleep (), getting medicines and bandaging/x-rays, they will be free. I am also going to keep and breed tortoises and breed budgies

I know Vets train long and hard, and I do have alot of respect for them, but it does just make me feel a little bit ripped off
Aaaah, feel a bit better now for that rant
Best ask the vet what they are prescribing and can i buy it cheaper on the net, they should oblige with the answer. Some mark up like Panacur for small tort's to £40 a shot not even 50p worth net prices.

I had to pay £38 last year to have my cat put to sleep. That said, I consider it was worth it because the vet was so lovely and it seemed very very peaceful.

For two years before that we had been paying around £35 a month for thyroid tablets. Have found out since that we could have got them a lot cheaper.

Swings and roundabouts I guess.

Take the tort to the doctors, if they try to say they are not human just tell them you will report them for racism or maybe speciesism
