Default Post this on facebook (shocing image of battery Hen)

This is a photo of a chicken rescued from a battery farm. If people saw this they may think twice about eating battery eggs.

Unhappy

I have chickens, they are free range and spoilt pets. It's too sad for words.

Poor little love. We've always bought free range eggs and can't wait to get our eglu next year and have really fresh free range ones, knowing our chickens are having a great life.
It astounds me that this cruelty still exists, but many people just see the price tag and go for the cheapest option without a thought for how their eggs are produced.

I had 3 ex batts but they had so many problems that when they died I couldn't bring myself to have more, so I got posh hens. I would still like to rescue some more but it breaks your heart when you see them suffering and having to have them put to sleep. One of mine prolapsed due to the stress caused by constant laying. The kids find it hard too, so we decided not to put them through it again. Bit of a double standard on my part, but at least we don't eat battery eggs, I will rescue more when the kids are older though.

We're going for pure breeds and hybrids as it's going to be a learning experience for us all, but I hope to rescue some ex-batts when we're established and know what we're doing (though they'd have a separate enclosure as I wouldn't mix them with the other hens).
I've heard it can be a heartbreaking process rescuing them. I'm not sure I'd want to put the kids through it while they're young either.

When you first get ex batts they will have to be kept separate, but once they have got their feathers and are back to as healthy as they can be, they can be integrated into the main flock. If they are kept within sight of the main flock the intergration shouldn't be too difficult.

Thanks, Wendy. I do hope to do some good and rescue a few at some point in the future. I just want to ensure they have a stress-free life once out of their cages.

Just in case you haven't found them already try this link to an ex batt forum, it's very friendly and so helpful, you can even find somewhere near you that rescues hens when you are ready. http://exbatteryhens.com/index/
