Overnight Heating Advice

Hi,
My 2 Horsefields are in seperate tables, indoors in room that is similar to a conservatory, temperature wise. There is a radiator that will be on when the weather is cold, but will only be on until10pm at the latest, and the room they are in will cool down a lot more than the rest of the house. I was considering a heat mat in the sleeping area which is like a box, so It could be put on the roof of the box as they always go there to sleep. Or a CHE but how does that help if there in the box? I am a first time owner so new to all this. What are your thoughts on these ideas, or is there something else I've not thought about. Thanks

a fan heater could be used to warm the room which may be quite costly.
oil filled radiator would be cheaper.
tubular heater even cheaper.
a heat mat positioned correctly could do the trick.
warming any area without insulation can be a waste of time and costly.
just seen the weather forecast in another post,it's looking bleak!!

how about creating a tent like structure over your tables with bubble wrap.
there will be plenty of ideas coming shortly!!

It is certainly looking bleak for the winter. Someone suggested a tubular heater to me if I wanted to put Darwin in the conservatory, I'll look for it now x

I am using a tubular heater and a CHE at the moment and a CHE in the correct holder with dome beats the tubular hands down for pure directed heat. My girls are outside in an insulated coop and the CHE adds another 10 degrees. You could direct it at the entrance to the box then you might find the tortoise will move towards or away from the heat as it wishes.

Same here chris, i have used a tubular heater in the sheds, but agree that the CHE is more directional heat and does the job just great, so although i have tubular heaters in the sheds they are unplugged (keeping them for back up just in case lol) x

Hi,
there is a electric fan heater in there at the moment, but yes it is costly and my husband doesn't like it being on, so need a cheaper alternative. Could you put a CHE in a floor standing spot light holder so you can move it and angle it?

is it poss to move them to a room that is heated, if not putting plastic up at the windows (if they're not double glazed) will help but generally if an owner isn't going to hibernate then they do need to keep the room heated. Nights are just as important as if the temps get to low then the torts will start to go into hibernation mode, I think the trigger temp is around 10c but it really need to be warmer than that if you want them active and 20c through the day, room temp that is. If you really can't heat the room at night then you might have to consider either using viv's or making a lid that can go over the tables at night with a low wattage ceramic heater in the tables under the lids.

A CHE gets scalding hot so can only be used in a proper ceramic holder. The zoo med domes come with clips so you can clip it to side of table and angle the heat that way. It prob costs same as running a light bulb and they kick out serious heat. I think they are great don't forget tortoises do like to cool down sometimes and with this concentrated heat they can still find a cool spot
