Thanks, I wanted to take them all to the vet to be checked out anyway. How can I make sure I take them to an expert. I live near Swindon and so far haven't found any nearby.

I am not sure of your area, but no doubt the more experienced tortoise ppl here will let you know if there are any good reputable tortoise vets near you, if not answered here put another post up asking for a recomended vet near you.

Talking about their weight again, when I got them I was given a weight chart from birth and looking at that their weight has fluctuated throughout. Since November 06, 2 have lost weight and 1 has put it on. Is this something to worry about?

Have you checked them against the jacksons ratio, this can be used as a guide for weight to lenght growth too, not just for checking before hibernation.

I have had a quick look at it but need to measure them and look at it properly. Their lengths have not been recorded so far but I will start doing it. Their weight has also only been recorded every few months before so I will start doing it weekly to get a proper picture.

Sophie, this is the root of good tortoise husbandry keeping weight and scl records.
I keep weekly weight charts and monthly scl (Length) charts. Hope this helps. Ade

Thankyou for the vet information. Great Western Referrals was recommended to me by a pet shop but I was sceptical how far to accept a recommendation from a pet shop!

Cheffi, as you are also in Wiltshire I was wondering if you know of a good supplier of hemp?
Thanks Sophie |

I emailed info@aubiose.co.uk yesterday and they got back to me with a local supplier almost immediately, I'm going to get a bale, if that's too much for anyone apparently it makes a good mulch too, so keep some for the tortoises and chuck the rest on the garden!
