Default First tropical fish babies

we have our first babies, tiny tiny speckled platy's. We moved the mum and dad into a nursery net last night because other fish were chasing the female, and this morning we saw babies. 21 to be exact! some died shortly after birth, but as platys are not known for canabalism, we have 21 left. I wouldn't have thought she had that many in her!
Just waiting for the Molly to have her first lot now.

thats the trouble with live bears....they can drop at anytime and then can get eatten. i wud have thought from breeding these my self that the adults wud have are the babies...they are canabalistic fish but when they are fry fish don't really have a parental responisbilty and u shud expect a few to be eaten by them.

well done anyway. are u feeding the fry on trpiocal fry food or giving them ur own mix. never need mine tropical fry food as the chemicals in them can cuase problems with fin development.

I've been told to feed the frozen shrimp, they are tiny, so you only need to break off a bit at a time. Some water fleas can be quite big in the bags they sell at our fish suppliers. I bought some fry food for the first week or so, then will move them onto the shrimp and some very fine fish food for live born fry.

good luck to your dad with his babies

do u mean actual frozen shrimp out of the freezer in the fish mix that they come in or are u on about freeze dried. frozen fish food lose many good proteins in them which is fine for adult fish but is bad for fry or young fish. freze dry is similar but not frozen, it comes in crubbelly cubes which cantain much better resources for the fry.

shirmp is a very hard type of food to digest for any fish really, even more so for fry...i only use shirmp on my L numbered plecs. u wanna get freeze dried food of either bloodworms, daphina or tubifex......stay clear from brine shrimp, krill and plankton as there harder to digest and tend to sink striaght away rather than float.

as for giving them water fleas.....they are big and expensive. a free alternative and smaller is to get a bucket of distilled water....leave it out side about 4 days then bring it in and u will see many tiny mosquito larve swimming around, net these out and put them in the tank....there none toxic, easy for fish to hunt and eat and free. i have been doing this for a good few years now and it is just a free way of getting some extra food for ur young fish.remember in the wild this is how all the pondfish babies get there food.
