They arent really heavy duty and they come with little metal pins to secure it into the earth, but I decided too put mine on bricks as I wanted to make a space for my 2 to get in and out of the cold frme once they get to try their new outside enclosure.

are these not just like 'outdoor vivariums'? stressing tortoises because they cannot get ast the glass?

No they are not outdoor vivariums, as my torts outside enclosure is 8ft x 4ft with the coldframe on bricks with a way in and out, their enclosure has plants somewhere to hide and explore, (they are only small so could not possibly allow them to roam my garden at the moment), and will be covered with protective netting, whereas a glass vivarium would reduce their lifes and they would not thrive very well. They are also brought in after a couple of hours outside.
My 9 month old Hermanns have a tort table 9 for the inside with correct lighting and interesting things to explore, please dont think coldframes are the same as a vivarium they are not. Tanya |

But a lot of people on this forum say vivs are bad for one reason or another and one of those reasons is that the tortoise becomes 'stressed' by the glass as it does not understand what is stopping it?, how would this be different for a cold frame?

Just been on this site and it says that the cold frame is UV resistent. Are there any that allow the UV to pentrate therefore being beneficial to the tortoise. Or am I being stupid and that's the intention of the coldframe.

well as far as glass stress goes
my reds green house has a wall built all around which measures well over 15 inches !!!! so the reds never ever see the glass ! and the ibera cold frame when it arrives will be treated the same raised !!! in addition the green house has an automatic opening window set on a thermostat plus me popping in all day lol so my torts will not cook plus the door is open plus the cut sleeper is open |
