Smile Meet Phillip my new tort! Plus questions.

Hey everybody I'm Luke and I have just become owner of Phillip an 8 month old Spur thighed tortoise I've only had him for 2 days and he already seems full of character~
Now some quick questions if anyone can help:
-Is it normal for him to spend multiple hours just sitting under his lamp?
-he hasn't figured out where his hide/bed is yet, is there a way to help him with that?
-and finally, I found him upside down in his water dish earlier and scared me half to death, I've now changed the dish but I was wondering how long he would've lasted in that situation?
Awesome thanks guys

hi there,he may be spending a lot of time under the lamp because he's not warm enough,do you have a thermometer?
a shallow water dish big enough for him to get in is ok.
when lighting and heating is adequate, and once settled in he should be stomping around, good luck.

Had a lighting failure on day 2 but its now been fixed and the table is hitting roughly 32 degrees directly under the lamp which he now seems to be spending most his time under, however he did stomp around for a bit earlier

Welcome to Phillip!

My personal opinion is that 32C is a bare minimum and sometimes a tort will sit under the lamp for long periods just to keep adequately warm.

If you raise the temperature at the hotspot a few degrees no harm will result (in my experience) but there must be space for the tortoise to move away from the heat.

This might result in more activity.
