Default Too young to be mating?

Hi,
I have two horsfields, which are 3 years old, both about 9.5cms, so still young, and they have started mating this weekend.
Aside from the squeaking being hilarious, I'm a bit concerned that they are too young? Should I be separating them? Also, I've read today that male:female ratio should be at least 1:2 or 3 - how true is this?
Thanks,
Adam

Could be a dominance thing. Do you know their sex's for sure? & yes ideally 3/4 females per male is a good ratio.

Males mature earlier (at a smaller size) than females. Your male is almost adult size, so this is not out of the ordinary. If he's bothering your female to much, than yes seperating them would be a good idea. She won't be adult till she is 6 inches.

thanks for the feedback. i read online there is a risk of becoming egg bound or creating deformities if they are mating too young. if i were to get more females to balance it out, what's the best way of acquiring new torts?
