Oh my goodness, poor Flo, she must be very traumatised , I would imagine the puncture wounds might be quite painful, I don't know if there's a risk of infection , it might be worth taking her to the vet even if she does seem ok.

You must have been panic stricken, so sorry for you

That must have been an awful shock!
I expect someone with a bit more knowledge will come along soon but I would be erring on the side of caution and would take Flo to the vets to ensure that the deeper puncture wounds hadn't pierced anything vital, especially as they have bled.

I'd also recommend having a wire lid rather than netting. Now that Darcy knows she can get into Flo's enclosure, she may try again, and the netting wouldn't be much of a deterrent for a determined fox either.

I'd suggest keeping Flo nice and warm this evening and maybe phone the vets tomorrow.

It's just amazing that she is so active, she's had a drink. It took a bit of time for her to come out of her shell, but she is just wandering round the enclosure at the moment. I think I'm going to raise the outdoor enclosure so it is higher up. I think I might change the netting to something more secure, I'm just amazed that Darcy managed to lift it off. The netting has two heavy planks on either end of it.

Most torts do need pain relief and antibiotics after any animal bite that has punctured so I would get the tort to the vets asap, even the friendliest dog can be a lethal enemy to a tort, I hope the tort is ok.

Problem is the lungs are beneath the carapace & so you have to be careful these haven't been punctured

Have you got any Iodine or F10? You can clean her wounds with diluted iodine or F10. I would keep her warm & well hydrated.

I would however get her a vet appointment just to be on safe side & also make sure you also keep her indoors to avoid flystrike.

You've found out the hard way unfortunately that you need something more substantial than a net with a dog around

I'm going to give her another bath in the morning, and then another when I get back in the afternoon. She just seems so active, which is brilliant. Thank you all for your replies, I don't think it's as serious as some of you are imagining, but we'll have to see over the next coming weeks what happens.

Oh no. How awful for everyone, poor Flo. Can't you ring out of hours vets. There will be some practice that can at least give pain relief until you can see a tort specialist or your own vet tomorrow.

The net will be no deterrent now, I'd make a hinged lid with padlocks, no dog or fox will get in then, with wire too.

I hope Flo is ok xx

I've just found a similar story on the internet, and they suggest bathing in salt water to clean the infection. I don't have any iodine, so I think this would be a good solution for now, and hopefully clean out the wound fully. What do you think?

Oh what a nightmare - you must have been distraught

I agree with what has been said, particularly a trip to the vet. the wounds really need to be checked out and ideally treated with something which will prevent any bacteria from starting an infection. Not sure about salt water

Appreciate that Flo is very active at the moment - keep an eye on her as it could perhaps be a pain or shock reaction. Hope all sorts itself out for you both
