Let me put this in perspective from my point of view... I hibernate species that are not thought to hibernate in the wild... It is still an unnecessary risk.
Of course it is..

and this thread is about the 'risk' of hibernation having a rare concequence.. and trying to get to the bottom of it, why it happened, and helping others avoid it.

go back through the archives of this forum... it is not a rare concequence...

Avoiding it is easy... don't hibernate.

Don't get me wrong... I hibernate many animals which are thought that they should not hibernate.

Nice going with the "I'm not going to rub salt into the wound" Ed but hey ho.

The eye open and shuffling are good signs Gemma.

*Your routine has worked for all but one tortoise. Still consider a vet visit, this might be something that was there pre hibernation which hibernation has*exacerbated. Its happened to me.

Dont beat yourself up *(or let others do it for you) . You're a very capable tortoise keeper, otherwise you wouldn't have a certain 4 Horsfields

I'm glad you posted this because today I found my lost tortoise who has spent the winter outside. The sun had bought him out. Thinking about your situation made me think about how to handle his emergence because although he was out, he was still cold. *He's doing ok, so there you go, some good out of bad.

Space. I so need to deal with that because I don't think I can get away with what I'm doing for much longer.

Yea... I know. That was so not my intent but the OP seems to be reasonable and thinking it through... it was still wrong on my part but this is a common post this time of year.
