my new red- advice needed as shes a mess
Just got a new red - shes in a right state but i couldnt have not got her as the poor girl has had a really bad innings. guy i got her off was ok -think he genuinely didnt have a clue as to state she was in as she was sold as a happy and healthy red which she is certainly now! He took pity on her 4 years ago and took her home from petshop he worked at and he thinks before that she was a old ladys who died. doesnt sound too bad...but state she was in im not sure what to do with her. shes out way now on her first table (sperate hospital one as god knows what she might have)- shes been on her own is 12 inches in length. she was kept in a viv and her feet show it- take a look, any advice what i should do with her feet would be appreciated as her nails are weird and cutting into her feet. also when i got her i noticed a load of blood on her head were her skin keeps getting cut on her shell and shes full of scabs- anyideas what to do? is it cos shes got a bit too much neck fat when compared to my troop? i have give her a good bath and put f10 in water but she wont let me get to the wound as just shoots in shell when i go near. oh and shes got a load of chips out of her shell and what looks like urine damage to botton of her shell as its all flaking away and a large piece/flake hanging off bottom.Any thoughts?

hi laura, sorry to hear she's not well.. trip to the vet is well in order...
I can't advise on much, but... I did see on that programme with ben fogel on (are they at lord bath's park ?) that one of their torts kept rubbing its neck on its shell.. they put a plaster on the offending part of the shell so the neck stopped rubbing .. think they said it was because the shell had grown to much.. not to do with a fat neck... Not sure if you want to try that? someone I'm sure will say whether thats a good idea or not, but surely it would stop the rubbing?

I think a vets visit is needed as soon as you can, to get the correct treatment for her. I'm not sure who you use for a vet, but we use Hannah Bould as our vet, she is well worth the trip, should be just over an hour from Liverpool.

you can start by filing any sharp bits on her shell so that she does not cut herself, her nails will take a lot of work, dont be tempted to cut them too short, just a little every 6 weeks, but if your not sure take her to the vets

Personally i would take her the vets asap. Be careful cutting the claws at the front as they dont seem to be mega long just growing the wrong way.
Also if she has been on her own all her life she MIGHT not mix well with any other tortoises and get stressed. This is a big MIGHT but something to be aware of if you intend to introduce her to the rest of you reds in the future. Well done on taking her on and let us know what the vet says

She doesn't look to bad Laura. A trip to the vets is in order though. The neck problem is probably because she was trying to get out of the glass doors of the viv. In a table that should heal up fine. Just need some antibiotic ointment for the sore.
The nails do need trimming. But like was said, you need to do it a bit at a time. She is though WC, not to say though that she hasn't been in captivity for a while. Danny
