A ceramic holder is all I would recommend due to the temps of the bulb but other than that I sould of thought a stand with one of these would be fine, it all depends on how you are going to fix it to be honest, I have the tera ceramic fittings which have a hanging bit or you can take it off and just use a chain, so there are lots of options, depends on how you want to set it up. Try Dazza's website it is great for all your tort bits,I have just spent a load this week

The mega ray does give off excellent light levels, but if you have a very large table you could try adding a strip light, the kind you may use for a fish tank.
Its getting very gloomy outside at the mo and your tort will sense this. Weak legs does sound a bit more than just temp and light related though, but I'm no vet.

Hi Jackie, I use Zoo Med tall stand and clamp lamp indoors with a MegaRay. But this is over a table set-up. If you do not usually have Sid in the house you might be hanging your lamp from a fixture of some kind as you wouldn't have a table.
With a larger tortoise you would want to make sure they cannot knock the lamp over on the stand. You can weight the stand plate. But it could be safest to hang your lamp from something Sid cannot get at in which case the stand might not be for you. You do need the lamp hanging vertically. Dazza has all the right stuff on his site, also he is happy to advise people, just contact him on the site. Sometimes there are draughts at ground level even in a warm and cosy house, so watch out for these if you have Sid at floor level. Sid will get a lot of light and heat stimulation from the MegaRay. I do hope this does the trick for her.

I agree totally Kelly, exactly why I asked if it was a tortoise vet that Janet took sid too.
A second opinion is definitely needed. Can I ask who the vet was please? Send privately if you prefer.

I have just spoken to Hannah about Sid, and she said she is having the same problem with one of her torts. I am going to get some uvb lighting for her and see how she goes from there. Today she looks like she is getting ready to hibernate, got herself covered up in the corner of her box. Hannah is going to email me some info tonight. I will keep you all informed on Sid's health.
