ochinese dwarf hmaster lived for 7 years and was friendly, but it is advised that dwarfs should bit be handled as they get strested very easy. larger hamster are better for handling. although i do think gerbils are great, we have 5 of them and there great for handling and tamed down within 2-3 weeks.

Gotta disagree Christian
In my experience chinese hamsters make excellent pets and do enjoy handleing, and are not officialy classed in the dwarf family. They are more nervous initialy though. I have found them the less likely of any species to bite and enjoy human company as long as they are socialised at a young age. I have found them to be much more docile but as said should be housed alone and only put together for breeding. I suggested gerbils as I have found them far easier than hamsters

i am only going by what the breeder i had mine from said....only we are on about a different speices of hamster.......common names and such.....used to have 7 dwarf hamster we had 2 brothers that lived together, 3 sisters that lived togther and 2 that lived on there own as they were same sex and not clutch mates. from reading these hamsters are found in colenies in the wild.
i am not saying they are not good to handle....i handled ours, but as they had massive enclosures with pleanty of toys, they did not really require it....but many sites and book do mention there not the best for handling....maybe we just had some nice ones then again many aniamls such as aboreal geckos should never be handled but yet i see many people doing this |

yup a bit short on space and dont want to ahve to keep a guinnea pig etc in a crampt cage which is also why im after a hamster already with a cage preferably
i would have a dog but my brother is alergic, i would have a snake but i have a tortoise, i would have a parot but i have a canarie... i dont know if my brother is alergic to hamsters becuase he never toutched mine (older sister did though) and it would only be in my room or outdoors in a exercise ball. accesories and cages for hamsters also seem nice and cheap so theres more of a choice at my local pet shop. i used to have a rabit called dempsy but it used to wee and poo everywere and nibble on power cables and curtains! eventualy died i cant remember how but he is burried in the garden under cement (has name and dob dod on it)

I loved my hamster, he was called Miami and I used to let him run around the house in the evening. He used to come when he was called, so I could put him back in his cage when I went to bed. He was good at catching spiders too. They make such lovely pets, but not really suitable for young children as they don't come alive until about 6pm.
