Thank you so much for the welcome!
Yes.. Sid is a character - has been since teeny. I have a full house here, with dogs, cats, chinnies, rabbits, ratties, guineas - and Sid rules the roost! Nancy plods along behind him, learning the ropes!
He knows where the fridge is, and will head butt that for treats... he will RUN after the persians... chomp on my collie's feet if he is asleep - then burrow down into his tummy if he's asleep..
He loves to burrow into the dog beds - Sid loves fleece, big cushions. Nancy's busier.. she has to be strutting about everywhere, full of energy and naughtyness.. and I have to keep an eye on her dieatry intake as she is abit of a piggy!

(with Cherry - one of our rabbits who is very gentle with the tortoises - not with us!! - but very gentle with them, and she's the one furry family member Sid never chomps!)

chasing persians...

Welcome to the forum Sarah

I'm afraid Nancy isn't a Hermanns tortoise. She is a Spur-thigh tortoise, Testudo graeca. I'd need to see more pictures to tell her subspecies, carapace (top shell) and plastron (bottom shell).

Danny

Ooo-errrr!! Fancy that!! - Thanks for telling me, Danny - I will get some better pictures for you and then perhaps you can tell me more. I am betting 'she' could well be a 'Nancy boy' an'all...
Will she be OK to live alongside Sid then? They seem to get along fine?

Hi Sarah,

Welcome to Shelled Warriors.

I would also try my best to seperate these 2 tortoises. Although their husbandry requirements are very similar, when Sid starts to get a little amourous as he will, his pestering could start to do damage to Nancy and you wouldnt want to risk that.

I can't believe the coincidence - because today, we've had 'dramas'.
It's not Sid getting fruity - it's Nancy @4pm (the weather's been scourching) the tortoises get very lively out in their pen, usually have a romp through their water tray and some supper. I then put them away @7ish. Tonight, Nancy started head banging against Sid, to the extent that Sid ran off, and was clambering to get away - and Nancy was nipping the soft part of his legs, right near his shell She was certainly intent on getting him - poor Sid was desperate to get away!

So I have taken the plunge and seperated them - Nancy, being the teeny one, will overnight in the tortoise table inside the house overnight and go out on the grass during the day in the pen as usual, with Cherry the rabbit.

Sid *gulp* now is in 'the Playhouse' overnight - which is bedded down with bales of hay, a cosy open hutch with fleecy cushions in it (as he adores fleece to sleep under). I am thinking this will aclimatise him to the natural seasons - and as the months go on, he can then hybernate. Each day, he can have the roam of the garden (which is tortoise proof, and he will be supervised).
