That's twice Ed made a mistake recently about ID although last time it was a deliberate one!

I'll see him coming next time with his 'mistakes'........

His mistake about the hermanni hermanni was not a real one which i should have realised right away. Ed was having a bit of fun which anyone is entitled to.

I knwo nothing about the tortoise in this thread except it's a handsom beast

At least when I make a mistake I correct it and take responsibility for the mistake. I follow up every piece of information to make sure I'm as correct as I can possibly be. If I find I was mistaken... I will correct the information.

As to IDs on testudo or any other group that has a broad range... I will be the first to admit right from the start how ambiguous a group can be and I think I have a fair amount of knowledge and resources to draw on.

I think the person to be cautious of is the one who states emphatically...

Btw... I'm sure I'll make more mistakes.

Even if the tortoises from mid to eastern Algeria were found to be a different subspecies than the rest in Algeria, whitei could not be used for the subspecies. It was described from Gilbert White's book, by Bennett in 1836. There are 2 names older that would take precidence over this name, T. pusilla (Linnaeus 1758) or T. mauritanica (Dumeril and Bibron 1835). I'm not sure where the specimens were from to describe these 2 species, so not sure which one would take precidence.

Here is the DNA work http://2446644949335406-a-1802744773732722657-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/evagraciamartinez/Fritzetal.%2C2009.pdf?attachauth=ANoY7coDrER8_mkNg R3VeTU6STxu-WCQjovzxd0TaesW2VF2AZBbuiX2dLMsVAcTYkovr0GDTAT4-RbG4Y9FkyhFm1Nj7m_T0NOrkLWq9qSXvark8wqi1Gbj6L41Vrm FHMXR4urkhGe9edQgOxhOQchTlndoTfgX1t1p94vqMUGgZF2d2 fr6qdJPKTSYHD5_taitkdsjTemCPtAZBtwcL_kh3qs1aC5JXQ% 3D%3D&attredirects=0

I'm glad you have it sorted. Hopefully you are sharing your expertise with those who have been trying to sort it for the last... ohhhh... 5 to 10 years... still no conclusion from the two groups I know of.

My point to the new keeper is that if those who are trying to sort the Testudo group cannot come to a conclusion...

...and I believe you posted that reference once before.

Sorted? Don't think I said anything about sorting out the Testudo graeca complex.
