just a thought, back in 1994 brian pursal said that tortoises continually grow on captivity
just wondering is this true, as i was said 12 yrs ago - personally i dont believe this
prian pursal wrote a book have it here but cant remember the name im sure
most people have it though

hey pmullen, i herd this to....im not sure if it is true.
my mums old tortoise didnt continually grow when she had him..he only grew to be 8 inches long and he never grew agen!!
she had him since she was 12 and she had him til she was 18 an he sadly died in hibernation.
but i dont believe it either.

They grow untill fully grown<g>. I have had adult for the last fifteen years that have not grown.
Others slightly smaller that will grow.

Probably where the book is coming from is that the Carapace is a living thing and any damage can regrow, depending on the extent and how deep..

Most books are so far out of date these days, as tortoise husbandry keeps changing for the good.
There are some good bits in his book, but like most things you have to pick out the good tips.
Which will come with experience. Nobody knows it all, and we are all still learning.
Thats why the internet is vital for your tortoises health, lots of experienced keepers, passing on
what they have learnt for the well being of their tortoises.
There is a lot of conflicting advice out there, usually from those who want to make a profit. Forums like
this one, dont make a profit, they just try to help and inform. Most of us are singing from the same hymn book<g>.
Even if we have slight differences on what works for our tortoises. The basics are the same.

its interseting how much things have changed, his book was probebly the best book
out at that time
