had the same sort of problem with my indian stars have now attached it to a bit of wood on the top of the substrate and attached it to the base,so hopefully they cannot cover it, their only little so that should be okay for a while. can you hang it down from the top of their enclosure? they could knock it about but it would end up back in the same position (would stay clean aswell)
