Question hatchlings?

i have noticed on pics that when pics of baby tots hatching are shown there shells are an odd shape. just out of curiosity, do they change? are they soft? all very cute tho!

yes whilst in the gg the shell has to be fairly soft to fit the egg

after hatchling it realigns its own shape and then begins to harden

They are usually folded and off centre inside the egg. That way you get a larger hatchling than the size of the egg. They are very pliable when they first come out. Over a few days they straighten out and assume the more rounded shape of a tortoise.

Ellie if you go back through the archived pictures on this forum you can find some hatchlings pictures put up by Danny and HermanniChris, these show every detail of tiny ones hatching. Somewhere there is a photo of a tiny one sitting in a bottle top absorbing the rest of his food supply which is still attached to the underside.

Probably it varies with sepcies but with Hermanns at least the shell is still hardening up a full year after hatching.
