Growing Plants
Hi,
I have bought a mixed bag of seeds from this site. I'm just wondering the best way to grow them. My plan is to buy a tray (around the size of a cats litter box) put some soil in, sprinkle the seeds on the soil then cover them with more soil and just leave it on the window. Will that work ok do you think? I have never grown plants before and have only had my tortoise a week. I would rather grow my own food for him than pick it in wild (which isn't an option this time of year anyway). Thanks for your help |

The problem with this time of year is that the young plants will be spindly as there's not enough heat and light on the windowsill. They'll do well if you do them in the spring however.
Have a scout around outside. There's still slender plantain, cat's eat and a few dandies about. Wash them well and you can bulk out any weeds with romaine and radicchio. Then next spring you can start to sow seeds to grow your own weeds. If you can, designate an area to the weeds and over the years it'll mature and do well. Winter flowering pansies are also fine to eat. Torts will also eat a little aloe and many of us use Nutrazu pellets, which can be fed a couple of times a week and are available from the SW shop.

Some seeds need a winter to get them going. If you have an area in your garden it might be worth scattering these seeds now. Alternatively you can trick the seeds by storing them in the fridge for a while - then when they are warmed up they suddenly feel its spring!
Don't forget Opuntia cactus as well, as a winter food. Im actually still finding plenty of weeds |

I've had a look outside, we did have some dandelions, but I've taken the last of them. All the other things are frozen now. My wife found some Budlea as well So I've been giving him a combination of them mixed with lettuce, rocket salad and grated carrot.
Will that be ok until I can get hold of some more weeds do you think? Thanks! |

I'd switch from the carrot to butternut squash. Carrots have a bit too much oxalic acid to be fed on a regular basis.
