Wild caught tortoise!!
I am down in Corsica at the moment and found an adult male hermanns tort at the side of the road.. Has anyone else done this? I was expecting him to be scared and withdraw into his shell, however he was just like a captive one and we could tickle his chin etc .. He was in good condition and looked very fit.. Perhaps he was a pet one that escaped? I didn't know what to do with him so I put him near a group of houses well away from the road .. I have never handled a wild one before so I don't know how scared they would be ?

I've seen wild ones on Corsica a couple of times and they didn't seem scared. One of them was in the road and I picked it up and moved it to a safe place and it did withdraw its head but it didn't panic. Both times it was special for me to see them. I don't think people on Corsica keep tortoises as pets. That would be a bit like me keeping a wild rabbit or something in the garden in a pen.
One of the times there were some kids kicking a ball about and they clearly thought I was a bit strange staring at the tortoise and getting excited. Crazy tourist! If you are on the island you must visit this place - it's fab https://www.visit-corsica.com/en/inf...m-and-aquarium

Thanks for the reply!!! The tortoise sanctuary here is rather amazing !! We went to it on our last visit.. I am thinking of going again .. It's strange to see a Hermanns just wandering about ... We asked a waitress if it was usual to see them about and as you said she just shrugged and said yes ..

How lovely just to see them in their natural habitat. Amazing they were OK with humans. Perhaps they are used to us, just as the waitress shrugged and was obviously used to seeing them.

oh my. how wonderful. I wish I could go to Galapagos and see the biggies but it's so commercialised and too much plastic I think I would cry. I packed up my house and job years ago and travelled but would have loved to see a wild tortoise. Saw devils and dingo's, komodo dragons, crocodiles (never skinny dip in a river in Oz....), Koala (one of my favs) and lizards (they are scarey except the ones uses as a brooch which are cute as ) , but never a tortoise (except san Diego but that's not the same).......Still in awe of the world....(and Christmas 175 days to go ....!!)
