Chalking
My egg is now at the end of day four and I have just had a quick look. I can't see any sign of chalking should it have started by now and how obvious is it? Do I need to shine a torch on it to see the chalking?
Thanks |

Hope this helps
Pictures as follows. 1-Fertile with a saddle shape chalking five days old. 2 Fertile same egg as above. 3 Fertile but showing spotty chalking as to a saddle. 4 Fertile. 5 Both fertile but the left egg is a lot older and fully chalked. 6 Front egg fertile and middle egg infertile. 7 This egg is infertile as there is no chalking and you can still see the yolk in the middle of the egg and not settled to the bottom I hope this is of help |

thanks turnip...
i still cant see any obvious chalking on the outside to be honest I have just turned all the lights off and shone the candling torch i use for my chickens and this is what i see. I take it this looks like a duff one? I think that is the yolk, seems to be at the bottom but more on one side as i couldn't see much from the other side. The egg hasnt been turned as i put a cross on the top. I honestly can't tell about the chalking - mine looks that white anyway :-/ Do we think this is a duff one? |

Not sure to be honest if they are only four days its still early days yet the chalking usually starts at the top then works down both sides it can take a bit longer so hang on in there im sure if Danny comes on he will tell you better he has a lot more knowledge than me

The yolk is settled to the bottom, which is good, but no I don't see any chalking yet. It can take up to 7 days to start to chalk. What temperature are you incubating at?

The incubator is set to 33 but i have a digital thermometer with the wire going into it and the probe in the air in the plastic tray right next to the egg. I keep checking the probe and it fluctuates between 31 and 29.5oc.
It is a good probe so I'm more inclined that that is the correct temp- the incubator instructions said there is a variant between the top and bottom of the incubator too. Does the yolk settle at the bottom if it is infertile too? |

With that much of a swing in temperatures it could very well take a week to start to chalk. No, yolks don't usually settle unless they are fertile. I have had eggs that didn't properly chalk but just go white. This took a couple of weeks to do it.
