Western or Eastern Hermann????
Hello tortoise lovers, i wonder if you could help me.
I have recently bought an adorable Hermann Tort from a pet shop down south, his nationality is confusing me. He is registered as a Testudo Hermanni meaning he originates from a Western country (France or Spain) right? But his place of birth is Macedonia which is in the East isn't it? I am very very confused can someone shed some light on how a tortoise born in the East can be a Western tortoise. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. Oh and whilst i'm asking silly questions. This morning I noticed a large garden spider roaming about in the tort table, I tried to catch him but he scuttled off, I know he won't poison my tortie and i know Leo is a herbivore, so will they be okay together until i can catch the spider and dispose of it? Any advice greatly appreciated, thank you. Juelsy {Leo's Ma} |

Easily as A10s only deal with species and not subspecies. All Hermanns tortoises are Testudo hermanni. The ones in the west are Testudo hermanni hermanni. The ones in the east are either Testudo hermanni boettgeri or Testudo hermanni hercegovinensis.

Thanks Danny. So if he originated in Macedonia he's likely to be an Eastern tort, is that right?
