First known, or appreciated when nearly lost.
It was not so many years ago that these were considered one of the most common South East Asian Freshwater Turtle species. Sadly today, due to the insatiable appetite for them, the Chinese Food markets have collected them out of existence in large parts of their natuaral range. As females produce such relatively few eggs, the rate of recruitment in a natural population is very low, and it takes years, decades to get a viable breeding population. Therefore, this is now a truly threatened species, along with the rest of their cousins in the Cuora group (Asian Box Turtles).
There is going to be a comprehensive article published shortly, on this group in a forthcoming issue of Practical Reptile Keeping.
