Does look to be a female, but doesn't look Tunisians to me. Looks to be a Moroccan and probably doesn't have papers.

Yes Moroccans are Testudo graeca marokkensis. Algerians and the tortoises in Spain are Testudo graeca graeca. The Spanish ones were brought over there 800 to 1000 years ago.

yeah, thats what I thought
apparently there were a few also in my home country (Portugal), but they were extinct 200-300 years ago. Apparently there were hermans and graecas there, but fully extinct for a few centuries or more now. A few people down south way inland still say they see a few tortoises on the olive fields now and again, but nothing has been proved and portuguese biologists say that most likely they saw Mauremys leprosa or Emys orbicularis.

I still hold the hope there is a very residual population somewhere or possibly a few of the ones across the border in spain are occupying free habitats back in Portugal as a lot of the agriculture has stopped now in Portugal and a lot of "free land" is available.
We are seeing similar results with other species now returning to occupy an habitat it was theirs a few centuries ago such as the Iberian lynx, the Red squirrel (he was officially extinct for centuries there and returned in the late 90's, I saw a few myself the last time I went home populations of wolfs are on the increase also grizley bear still missing officially but a few "sightings" on the north of portugal reported. I suspect no one is actively searching or researching for the tortoises as they dont seem to be a priority like the lynx, I'll need to speak and give this idea to a few biologists friends to see if they can do anything about this
