Default New Musks - Scran & Spanner

Got a bit of turtle bug after seeing some in Rome Zoo then wanted some even more after seeing them in our local pet shop whilst buying tortoise stuff.

After a bit of research have got these two beauties today. Introducing Scran and Spanner -

They're tiny. We have six hatchlings, a juvenile, three youngsters and an adult male and female Common Musk.

As they get bigger the gravel will have to be removed so that they don't accidentally eat it. I can't tell from the picture how deep your water is, but they really do need it shallow at that age/size, with plenty of resting places. Our Musk tanks are bare bottomed, but a lot of keeper use play sand.

Unfortunately as they mature they may not get on together even if both female, although of course this is some time away.

Cheers for the comments.

The gravel is about 5mm so far to big at the moment to be an issue but I will monitor it and change as required.

The water is about 7 inches deep. I'm limited by the size of the heater fitted as it needs to fully submerged. I have angled it as much as I can to reduce the depth. However they have got a landing dock thing which has an area just below the waterline and also they have a partially submerged hollow log which provides a level 1 inch below the waterline which they seem to enjoy.

7" is really too deep for them, 4" is about the right depth for such tiny turtles. They need resting places - wood, plants etc. What temperature is the water? What heat/lights are you using?

Sorry for all the questions, but just trying to help.

I know it may be a bit deep but I cant really get it any shallower without compromising the heater. They have a partially submerged hollow log which provides an underwater resting place about 1-2 inches, also there is a plant and a landing dock.

Water temp is between 26-27.5 degrees.

I have fitted a D3+ compact 23W UV lamp for UV. As its an enclosed tank (to keep my inquisitive dog's paws out) I have had to be careful with the basking lamp. I have fitted an extra ES batten holder and am experimenting between a 15W and 40W pigmy/short lamps. The 25Ws seemed too long and would be too 'in their face' The lamps are offset from the basking areas. Anything bigger or halogen spot would be like a death ray! Final tweaking is still ongoing. In fact the 15 has just gone back in as I'm typing.

Food wise we have bought dry hatchling food, dry turtle food (dried small insects and things), frozen turtle food and frozen bloodworms. We have only had them 24 hours so havent tried them all but they absolutely monstered the bloodworms!.

Have a read of this for some very good info:

7" is too deep for them though.
