Mud Turtle pics - Page 3

If they are outside in their ponds in teh winte,r how do you stop it from freezing? Sorry if this is a silly question but it jsut occured to me what with the bad weather we're having

Hi Beth,

Believe it or not it's ok for a turtle pond to freeze over in the winter. Most of North American Turtles and terrapins hibernate like tortoises. The winters where these turtles live in the wild can be just as severe as those in the UK. Most do this by burying down into the mud at the bottom of ponds for the whole winter. I understand they are able to diffuse oxygen from the water around them whilst buried like this. As long as the whole pond doesn't freeze, they are ok. The real probem in the UK is that unlike their natural homes, our Spring is not particularly warm and they can have a hard time getting back to normal functioning temperatures.

I dont mind which..
I have asked at japanese water garden in Nottingham.. next door to Bardill.. they say they dont have Musk because they not popular as Yellow bellied Slider and Map!!

we dont have reptile shop near me.. I tried Wharf in Pinxton they dont do turtle..

I did consider YBS but I wanted wait til my pond ready .. my hubby like the idea of small one in fish tank.. thats why Musk ideal.. not going BIG.. I though about Mud but heard they much harder to get..

Wharf is odd

that they don't have any turtles cept maps occasionally however they own 3

pignose turtles and currently have a matamata for sale.

What the shop should have said is BABY YBS are more popular!

I'll keep an eye out for any muskies in your area and let you know if I see any for sale. Mud's are a little harder to find, I'm lucky enough to have Yellow (like the pic's in Wyrd's original post, sorry Wyrd) and Three Striped muds.
