in the slim chances that you actually managed to track down a true Hermanni Hermanni it would be seriously recommended that you did not cross breed as Hermanni Hermanni are like gold dust and mixing the species would be a terrible loss to Hermanni Hermanni.
Also bare in Mind the adult size of a hermanni Hermanni is only 14 cm were as an adult Hermanni Boetgerri is more like 30 cm........double in size!! it would be seriously dodgy to expect a female to carry eggs of a tort twice its size, thats before we get on to the size of the male organ that would have to do its work first!! So I would think it would be very dangerous to try to breed from a mix of these two......if not impossible. Dawn |

Eddie was a gift from a pet shop originally. Now I'm trying to find more t.h.h., from a UK breeder obviously, and am finding it extremely difficult. It's a shame as I have a great outdoor setup with room for many torts, especially as the t.h.h. dont grow that big, but it seems Eddie will be destined to be on his own for the forseeable future unless I magically stumble across a breeder Can anyone help me out here? I'd be over the moon if you could |

Hello,
I think that we have a male testudo hermanni hermanni. When we bought him we were told he was an italian dwarf tortoise, however when trying to get back in touch with the breeder to try and get a female we found he was the breeder who was banned from keeping animals for five years because of his animal cruelty. From looking at all the pictures I think he is deffinitely a hermanni hermanni. We just wondered if anyone knew if we could get a female from somewhere although we are very aware that they are extremely hard to get hold of, and of course are unable to be sexed as a hatchling. So were in abit of a predicament!! Any advice from anyone? Ta |

Chris - that is brilliant - well done! Clarified things for me; a very clear and comprehensive summary of the differrences between the 2 sub-species. Thank you. (any chance of hercegovinensis v boetgerri - I would find that really helpful too!).

Great photos and descriptions once again from Chris. That should help those keepers who ask here which subspecies their Hermann is.
When Chris is not busy maybe he can do the same for the Hermanni Hermanni from different parts of the range - so we would have the Corse and Variose Hermanni's from France, the Puglia and other variations from Italy and the Majorcans and other Spanish too!
