Congratulations on all the fertile eggs Darren. Do you still get excited when you find out they are fertile or does the excitement wait till hatching time? I would be like the proverbial cat on a hot tin roof from the minute they are laid!

ok i have lots of egg questions so bear with me....
at what age would a tort be able to get 'pregnant'?
how long are torts 'pregnant' for?
how many do they lay?
how long till they hatch?
how do you no when they are fertile?
how, when and why do the eggs chalk over? does this mean they become harder?

i appreciate that species differ but i was just after a generalisation.
thanx

Thanks all

Laraine yes its great to see fertile eggs develope and hatch

Dazza the first hatching should be in late November strating with the Ibera I will post pictures

Bernards mum

In general tortoises usually become sexually reproductive when they reach a certain weight and size rather than age especially in a captive enviroment so depends on speices really

Once sexually mature and matings have been observed eggs follow anytime from 4-8 weeks later but agin depends on the individual animal

clutch density again depends on the speices , Eygptians for instance usually lay 1-2 eggs while a large adult sulcata can lay upto 20 or more

Again depends on spieces , Ibera around 60-68 days ,horsfields 55-63 redfoots 120-170 hatching times also depends on temps as well

In geneal a trained eye can note a fertile egg with the aid of a candling tourch at anything from 2-12 days into incubation
