Exo Terra Ceramic Heat Emitter 100W
Does anyone use these Ceramic Heat Emitter's for their tortoises and are they any good?

I use one of these - and in fact I have just 'woken' my pair up this morning after 7 weeks in hibernation and have found the blasted emitter has 'blown', so I need to go and buy another (the exact one you linked to in fact!!).
I use it in conjunction with a tube heater so it doesn't have to work overtime to heat the area of their house furthest away from the emitter.

Thanks for replying.
So do you use these instead of a 60/100w reflector bulb for heat? I'm a bit confused as I asked on another tortoise forum and they replied "Tortoises need bright light to simulate the sun so they are not much use for torts to be honest. The info given by pets at home on that link is totally incorrect as basking light should always be bright. Dull heat emitters just cause confusion and possibly dehydration if they were to sleep under it in the night." Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging you or the other poster, I'm just trying to find out which is best. Thanks x |

I use the CHE for overnight as one of my torts doesn't like to be too cold or she struggles to wake up. I use a normal light bulb in the day to simulate the sun as I've read that they like it to be bright. Also use a UVB strip light. This works for me, not to say that anyone is right or wrong, but whatever works for the individual I think.

basically my set up is a heat & light (separate). I have a 3ft tube heater and that heat emitter running 24/7 The temps are set to 24 in the day & 12 at night, but I'll be raising the day temp a couple of degrees at the weekend, as they only came out of the fridge last weekend. For lighting, I have a 10.0 UVB 3ft reptisun tube light, and a "daylight" UVA spot bulb, both of which only run during the daytime. Worth also nothing that my tortoises live outside all year (except for hibernating) in a custom made house
