We only use the loam and topsoil with the marginateds, hermans and spurs. For the hinges we use reptibark as it retains much more moisture and increases humidity.

aw right.... any idead where i can get that bark from? would i beable to get it from a normal pet store??

Its called different things depending on the brand. Its just a block of substrate and you soak it in water and it expands to about 3/4 times the size. Reptile shops sell it and we buy it at the garden centre. Shop around for it as ive seen it at various prises, but its good stuff :P

isnt kids play bark ok to use for them?? im sure i read that stuff is ok to create more himidity.

Children play bark can be brought from B&Q but i would only recommend it for adult tortoises.

Rather than try to make the whole enclosure humid it is easier and I think better to provide a humid area where the tortoise can go in and out of. This way you decrease the risk of shell rot that is so frequently found with the tortoises that are kept too humid.

That reptile bark is probably ground coconut huls. It is found in bricks. The stuff is great for humid hides. It retains moisture and resists molding.
