Lynne if you wanted to keep fish id recommend cory catfish, they are peaceful and eat up all the scraps, my musk seems to leave them alone, even when they eat food out of his mouth and nibble at his shell haha, other fish however have been eaten guppys are apparently particularly tasty!

In deep sea world near Edinburgh there's an Amazon River section and in the Piranha 'tank' there are common plecos which are massive.

I kept fish for 20 years and never came across any pleco that was really effective in cleaning the tank of algae but the one that was better than the rest was the bristlenose plec, ugly as sin but only gets to about 4 inches so very handy. There are algae eating shrimps from Japan too but fish just eat them Best ways of avoiding algae is not to have a tank at all . Keeping the tank in a room that doesn't get much or any sunlight is a big help and keeping the water chemistry right is another, too many nutrients in the water will cause algae bloom.

A planted tank helps starve the algae of nutrients too. Plecos need to be fed sinking pellet food and algae wafers but guess what, the algae wafers end up causing more algae to appear People think they live on algae but they don't, they need other food too

listen to those urges... haha, i love my turt and his fishy friends, its so peaceful watching the tank. though im over run at the moment... my guppy gave birth to 81 fry a few weeks ago, and yesterday dropped another 60 odd.. though she did eat a lot of this batch. I thought my Stinky would gobble them up too.. but he just ignores them! the turt tank and the tort table are actually back to back in my games room (my poor husband lost his games room to my animals until our lounge is done) its so nice to stand and look at my shelled pets on land and in water!

apologies for the ramble, dont know where that came from... Louise

We had three tanks at one point - the large 5' one, a smaller hexagonal one just for guppies and a breeding tank. I made the stupid mistake of buying a tropical frog. It was teeny, about the size of a 10p piece, and the guppies started disappearing......
The frog, Jane (named after the secretary at Hubby's workplace ) went in the big tank and grew and grew and grew. The bigger fish weren't going to be gobbled up but Jane did a great job of disposing of dead fish.
Jane survived for about 8 years and was an interesting addition to the tank.

Hearing about your guppies made me think of her.
