i brought pellets ages ago before i knew how bad they are, and i tried some for bob but he didn't eat them anyway lol,
i think the best way of having a healthy long lived tortoise is to give it what it would have in the wild. alice x

well this is all new to me, but i intend to get a tortoise myself, at the moment my sisters are fed on these, as recomended to her by a pet shop, she bought the torts off a breeder, she feeds pellets but also gives lots of weeds small amount of fruit every now and then and fresh salad each day, they seem healthy enough, its bad that the shops sell this stuff if its so bad for the torts, i have bought her some seeds off ebay to grow for them now.
i will be showing her this thread i think.

most petshop are there to make a sale and will push for u to buy the comercial foods for your torts, these are no good for them as you can see what happened to frizbee also fruit should not be given to torts as they cannot digest it properly, the best think you can feed your torts is weeds weeds and more weeds with some added edible flowers

Not all commercial foods are dangerous. In my opinion.

Would anyone recommend a light sprinkling (using a pepper mill) over romaine lettuce during the time when there aren't many weeds? Was just wondering if it's ok in moderation or is protein a no-no for torts?

Why would you take the risk of inflicting harm or ill health to a tort by feeding an incorrect diet? especially when the correct food is free and practically on most peoples doorsteps

What is this nonsense????????
Not only is it totally and absolutely wrong... it's slanderous. So... if I put together an informative and accurate post on why some commercial diets are acceptable it will be made into a 'sticky'. The original post really needs to either be removed or given fair rebuttal.
