Best temps and humidistat

My table arrived today

What temps should I be aiming for and also the cooler end what sort of temp should that be maintaining ,

Also, is it wise to put some plants in there

Hi Lisa,

You haven't said what kind of tortoise you have but generally speaking the basking spot should be between 32 and 34 degrees and the cool end of the table should be 20. These are the daytime temps.

At night ideally the temperature shouldn't fall much below 18

You can put plants in the table - however ones that the tortoise like to eat wont last long if the torts have access to the whole plant. (it will all be eaten). You also need to make sure you don't put any plants in that would make them ill if they eat them.

I was going to just put some grasses in there, called cares ( oshimenisis evergreen)

What about some marigolds and or pansys

YTou must be carefull with marigolds as the common (french i think) is bad for torts. They can eat teh Pot marigold but I can never find any seeds for that type.

Pansys are fine although Ideally you want ones that havent been bought ina shop ready grown deu to fertiliszers etc. You can grow them on though and then feed the new growth.

I've not had much success with growing plants in tortoise tables. The heat and dryness tends to be harsh on them and I reckon they need to be out of reach of the tortoises otherwise they will get trampled. It can look nice though.

I'm not green fingered either. I've got 2 potted succulents in my table, they seem to be doing ok at the moment, but Darwin is too small to get to them even though I've made a ramp for him out of the coco coir, he's not really bothering with them. I occasionally put in a living lettuce and that is trampled straight away. I don't think he'd leave flowers alone that we're planted in the soil. x
