I'd imagine that being cold blooded they wouldn't smell when dead or not as much as a warm blooded animal , not a very nice subject (sorry) I to hope they aren't but it doesn't sound very promising.

Sorry missed that:0(
Tortoises when they are re-hydrating can hold their heads under water for several minutes without popping their heads out of the water, or drowning. I know its scary, but perhaps they need the rehydration. A tortoise wont drown in shallow water, when its their choice to drink.

I am very sorry to inform you all that the worst fears are confirmed, I took them to the vet who said they had gone. I told him what I have done during the process and he said I did everything right as I was worrying that I have left it late in the season or that I hibernated them too long but 12 weeks is not too long for 6 yr olds and he thought their weight now was ok, a little light maybe but to be expected now. He didnt have a theory especially as I hibernated them fine last year.
My daughter and I have buried them now. RIP We still have Spartacus who will make the most of the new outdoor enclosure. Thanks to everyone for their support.
